The 2021 National Sports Festival started in Edo State over the weekend with 13 events. Here are some of the highlights after the close of events on the first day.

10 Tested Positive For Coronavirus

Ten athletes have tested positive for the coronavirus at the 2021 National Sports Festival which started in Edo State on Sunday.
This information revealed by the COVID-19 Incident manager in Edo State, Dr Obi on Sunday to the media. He confirmed that they are isolating and receiving medical at the Stella Obasanjo Isolation Center.

“So far, we have ten persons tested positive and seven of them have been moved to the Stella Obasanjo Isolation Center. They will be there taking their doses until they’re declared fit enough to get back into the public.” Dr Obi told the media. Team Delta Picks First Gold At Edo 2020 National Sports Festival

Ese Ukpeseraye Is First Athlete To Win Gold

Delta State Cyclists, Ese Ukpeseraye, is the first Athletes to win a gold medal at the festival.

He defeated other cyclists in the 80km bike race to achieve this feat.

Delta and Bayelsa Drags Gold In Water

It’s harvest gold rush for both Delta and Bayelsa States in the Swimming events after the first day events at the National Sports Festival.

Team Bayelsa won three gold medals in the Swimming events with Ifiemi Gabe, in 100 meters free styles, Goldie Ifie, and Yellow Yeighya made it three in the men’s 200m freestyle event.
The team also won two bronze medals and one silver medal in the events to close medal shopping in the pool for the day at 5 medals.
Delta State on the other shows clear intent of retaining their title as they ended the day as the best state in the swimming pool, with four gold medals.

The 100m breaststroke men were won by Foresight Osamezu, Timipamere Akiayefa l in the women’s 200m Butterfly and Akiayefa also struck gold in the women 50 m Backstroke.
Delta state also won bronze in men’s 50 m Backstroke and in the 4× 200m relays to finish the day in the swimming event with six medals.

More Golds Golds For Bayelsa In Judo
Team Bayelsa made it Gold number 4 and 5 in the Judo event as Ese Bassey and Severe Mathias got gold while Udeze Amarachi had a bronze medal.
