One of the administrative focal point of the Ministry of youth and sports under the leadership of Hon. Sunday Dare is to restore the glory of the National Stadium Surulere.
In this regard, the minister has inaugurated the Ministerial Implementation Committee on Monday; headed by Gabriel Aduda. Their job is to restore the monument to its original blueprints. One of the task before the task force is to ensure the edifice is rid of all illegal occupants.
According to the sports minister:
‘’The National Stadium is a Federal Government property and therefore no private or individual structure should find its way there without the approval of the Federal government of Nigeria and the Ministry of Youth and Sports Development, cleared from the office of the Honourable Minister. Any of such structures that short of these two major approvals is in contravention and as such remains illegal’’.
The Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development also charged the Implementation Committee of the Report of the Ministerial Taskforce on National Stadium Surulere, Lagos to carry out their assignment with dispatch, even as he assured that the edifice would be restored to its original blueprint as the journey to restore the lost lost glory of the Stadium has begun ” The committee’s role is to ensure delivery of the facilities at the stadium in line with the new vision of the Ministry on the comprehensive audit at the National Stadium, Surulere.
“This is a monument of national pride which had suffered neglect for over 18 years due to limited resources. We have seen a departure from its original blueprint to a point in which you could hardly recognise the National Stadium Surulere as a sporting facility’’, Sunday Dare told the committee headed by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr Gabriel Aduda.
Responding on behalf of the Committee, the Permanent Secretary, Gabriel Aduda while thanking the Minister for the opportunity to serve, assured that the Committee would deliver on its mandate/terms of reference within the time frame The minister set up a task force on 9th June 2020, on the National Stadium Surulere to verify and screen the legality or otherwise of the occupants. The stadium premises is occupied with various alcohol selling joints, known as beer parlour and other businesses in retail shops and chalets.
The Edifice was a shadow of its old self when it hosted the Africa Cup Of Nations finals 1980 and 2000, also the final of the FIFA Under 20 World Cup hosted by Nigeria in 1999.
