UFC middleweight champion Isreal Adesanya next fight will be against light heavyweight titleholder Jan Blachowicz, Dana White told a world conference on Saturday.
Israel Adesanya is billed to face Robert Whittaker after the latter victory over Jared Cannonier in UFC 254 but Whittaker chickened out as he “didn’t want to fight Adesanya just yet” mused White.
The UFC President said : “This makes the coast clearer for the champion vs champion bout as Adesanya would now need to step up to the light heavyweight after he conquered the middleweight category including unifying his interim title with Whittaker’s middleweight championship at UFC 243”.
He has since gone ahead to make it a total dominance at the weight category, defeating the likes of Paulo Costa, Yoel Romero, Kelvin Gastelum, Anderson Silva, Derek Brunson and the likes.
Jan Blachowicz defeated Dominick Reyes to claim the vacant title at UFC 253, the same fight card that Adesanya headlined when he defeated Costa.
Now the two champions will face each other next year and in a yet to be named venue.
Jan Błachowicz is a polish-born February 24, 1983, is a Polish professional mixed martial who turns professional in 2007. He currently holds the UFC Light Heavyweight title having won 27 of his 35 fights.
A victory for Adesanya will make him the first African to win a UFC world title in two different weight categories.
